Hey guys. I've read some mixed reviews about UMass Amherst recently and I was hoping someone could give me a firsthand account. Particularly, I'd like to know about the student life. Are the dorms nice, are people friendly, what kind of clubs or groups can you join?
UMass Amherst, nicknamed "ZooMass" - but don't let that intimidate you - has a vibrant and active student community. In fact, the university boasts over 500 student organizations, ranging from the Student Government Association to interest-based clubs like video game development or hiking, so you're bound to find a community that aligns with your interests.
The dorms vary in quality. There are more traditional dorms, like Van Meter, which are a bit older. However, in recent years, UMass has built suites and apartment-style living options, like North Apartment D, that are more modern and comfortable. It's part of a plan to transform the campus atmosphere.
One of the noteworthy features of UMass Amherst is its dining services, which have won numerous awards. You definitely won't go hungry! UMass Dining consistently grabs top spots in national rankings for best campus food, so that's a major perk.
In terms of friendliness, like most big universities, the atmosphere can be what you make of it. You'll encounter a diverse range of personalities among the student population, but in general, there's a strong sense of camaraderie. The school has a big campus, but if you get involved in a few activities and classes that interest you, you'll likely find your tight-knit community and make lasting connections.
Lastly, sporting events, particularly hockey and basketball, draw substantial student attendance and facilitate a lively school spirit. So, whether you're looking to get out into nature, enjoy some fantastic food, make new friends through clubs and societies, or cheer on your fellow Minutemen and Minutewomen at sporting events, there's something for everyone at UMass Amherst. Happy college searching!
