Admissions Process at Ohlone

Not everyone talks about community colleges, but I believe they're awesome stepping stones. I'm looking at Ohlone right now. Could anyone tell me what the admissions process at Ohlone is like?

Ohlone Community College, like most of its counterparts, offers an open admission policy, which means that all individuals who have a high school diploma or its equivalent like GED are eligible to enroll. It's great that you're focusing on this option because community colleges indeed offer a great path to high-quality education at a lower cost. So, here's what the process generally looks like at Ohlone:

1. Application: You first have to compete an online application through the California Community Colleges' centralized platform, CCCApply. This is usually available year-round.

2. Orientation: After being accepted, you'll have to attend a college orientation, which could often be done online. This will serve as your introduction to the college's various programs, services, policies, graduation requirements, and much more.

3. Assessment: In order to help you succeed in your courses, Ohlone provides an assessment of your math and English skills. You may have to go through their Basic Skills Assessment process unless you have recent SAT, ACT, Advanced Placement, or EAP scores that can be used as a placement alternative. In certain cases, grades from other colleges may also be used.

4. Academic Counseling: Once your assessments are done, you'll need to meet with a counselor to develop your Student Education Plan (SEP). The counselor will guide you on the courses you need to take to achieve your goals, whether that is to earn an associate degree, transfer to a university, or complete a career program.

5. Registration: After your SEP is developed, you register for classes online through WebAdvisor, the college’s online student portal, based on your registration appointment date.
