Which well-known universities are there in California apart from the Ivy's?

Hey guys! I'm looking to apply to colleges in California, but I want to consider more than just Stanford and the UCs. Can anyone help me out with some well-known yet not omnipresent California universities? Bonus points for strong programs in Computer Science!

Certainly, there are many excellent universities in California beyond the UC system and Stanford.

Starting with private institutions, you could consider the University of Southern California (USC), which is located in Los Angeles. It's renowned for a wide array of programs, including a very strong Computer Science department. USC has a balance of a vibrant campus culture and city access, and it’s known for its commitment to community service.

California Institute of Technology (Caltech) in Pasadena is another exciting option if you're interested in STEM, particularly Computer Science. This institution offers small class sizes and a high faculty-to-student ratio.

Another university to consider is Pepperdine University, located in Malibu. Pepperdine has reputation for its business programs, but it also has a Computer Science and Information Systems program worth considering.

Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles is another well-regarded private institution general, with Engineering and Computer Science among its strong science programs.

For public institutions, the California Polytechnic State Universities, better known as Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and Cal Poly Pomona, are well known for their "learn by doing" philosophy, particularly in the fields of Engineering and Computer Science. San Luis Obispo has been particularly recognized for its Computer Science program.

San Diego State University is not part of the UC system but is a highly regarded public university with a vast range of academic programs, including Computer Science. SDSU also offers exciting study abroad programs and has vibrant student life.

Do note that the strengths of Computer Science programs can be subjective and largely depends on what you are looking for in a program. Be sure to explore each institution to understand its philosophy, resources, faculty, research opportunities, and more.
