Is learning a foreign language mandatory in college?

I've been taking Spanish all through high school because I heard colleges like it, but I'm curious if I have to keep going with it in college? Are foreign language classes a must in higher-ed, or does it depend on your major or school?

Great question! The foreign language requirements in college can vary significantly depending on the college and major you choose. For liberal arts colleges or majors, you'll often find that completing a certain level of a foreign language is required to graduate. Some institutions may even have specific language requirements for all students, regardless of their major. The idea is to provide you with a well-rounded education. On the other hand, if you're going into a major like engineering or computer science, the requirements might be less strict or non-existent, as these areas might prioritize other competencies.

I always recommend looking at your prospective schools' graduation requirements to see their language policy. That said, continuing with your Spanish could be beneficial both personally and professionally, as bilingualism is a great skill to have in an increasingly global job market. Ultimately, whether or not you need to keep up with it in college will depend on where you go and what you study, but having it on your transcript could be a plus!
