Transitioning to Emory University

What's it really like to go to Emory University in terms of academic rigor, campus culture and opportunities? What do you wish you knew before going in?

Emory University offers high academic rigor expected from a top-notch institution. The coursework is challenging, and you might find it rigorous, especially if you're enrolled in one of the more demanding majors like pre-med or business. However, faculty members usually are quite accessible and supportive.

The resources available to students are immense, whether it's research opportunities, study abroad programs, or internships. For instance, Emory's connections with the CDC (located literally across the street) provide unique opportunities for those interested in public health, biology, and related fields.

For campus culture, the environment tends to be collaborative rather than competitive among students. There's a healthy mix of social activities, with an active Greek life, but it's not dominant and there are plenty of other options for students not interested in that scene.

One thing you might want to be aware of is that Emory's location, while in Atlanta, is a bit separate from the main city hustle. However, there are shuttles available to take you to downtown Atlanta, and the surrounding area, known as the Druid Hills, is quiet, safe, and beautiful.

In terms of opportunities, Emory's extensive alumni network and Career Center offer strong support for job placement and internships.

Before heading in, you may want to understand Emory's distribution requirements, as they can be intensive and limit your ability to jump right into your desired major coursework. Make sure to consult with an academic advisor early on to ensure you stay on track while also pursuing courses of interest.

Finally, the weather in Atlanta is generally warm, but the winters can get chillier than you’d think, so don't forget to pack a decent winter wardrobe!
