How is a GPA above 4.0 calculated?

Hey guys, I'm a bit curious and maybe stressed out on understanding the GPA system. I've seen some students on here with GPAs above 4.0 and it got me wondering, how is that even calculated? And what courses or classes can actually contribute to it? Thanks in advance!

Hi there! Your confusion is understandable. The 4.0 GPA scale is commonly used across U.S. high schools and colleges, but some students can have GPAs above this mark due to the weighting of certain courses.

Here's the basic breakdown: Most schools operate on a 4.0 scale, where an A (>=90%) is equivalent to a 4.0, a B (>=80%) to a 3.0, and so on. However, some schools employ a weighted scale for more rigorous courses.

Weighted GPAs take into account the level of difficulty of a course. For example, AP (Advanced Placement), IB (International Baccalaureate), and some Honors courses are usually given an additional point due to their rigorous curriculum. This means that an A in such a course could come out to be a 5.0 rather than the regular 4.0. A 'B' in these harder classes would be equivalent to an 'A' in a standard class, so it would also equate to 4.0. This is why you see GPAs calculated above 4.0—it's due to students taking, and doing well in, these higher-level classes.

Remember to check how your school calculates GPA as the specific method can vary. Some schools use both unweighted and weighted GPAs, while others stick to one method only.

I hope this helps clarify the GPA calculation system for you!
