Test-optional policies: Are they really optional?

I've noticed that some universities are labeling their admissions as 'test-optional.' I guess I'm a little confused - is it really 'optional' or do colleges still expect you to submit your ACT/SAT scores? 🤔 Any insights would be super helpful!

When schools say they are "test-optional," they truly mean it. If a school is test-optional, this means you can choose whether or not to submit your SAT or ACT scores as part of your application. However, without test scores, the emphasis on your other components (i.e., GPA, class rigor, extracurriculars, essays, recommendations) may increase.

Certain schools are even test-blind, which means they do not consider SAT or ACT scores at all. For example, the UC and Cal State schools do not look at SAT or ACT scores for the 2024-2025 application cycle.

Keep in mind, however, that whether or not to submit your test scores might depend on a few factors. If your SAT or ACT score is strong in comparison to the average scores of admitted students at the school you're interested in, submitting your score could potentially strengthen your application. Conversely, if your SAT or ACT score is lower than the average scores at the schools you're applying to, not submitting your scores would likely be a better option.

Remember, test scores are just one component of your college application. If you choose not to submit them, your other application components will need to shine.

Schools with test-optional policies recognize that one test on one day is not necessarily indicative of a student's potential for academic success. That being said, the option is yours to use as you deem fit for your application!
