Experiences with Big 10 Universities?

Hey folks, I'm seriously considering applying to Big 10 Universities and I could use some advice from the community. Does anyone have any information on their academic rigor, social environment, and their support for students? Really appreciate any feedback!

Response: Hello! The Big Ten universities have their own unique qualities, so I'll provide an overview rather than going into specifics.

Academically, these universities are solid – they are home to some reputable programs and offer opportunities for research, internships, and job placement. You can expect rigorous coursework, irrespective of your chosen major. They have a wide range of majors, so there's something for nearly every academic interest.

In terms of the social environment, there is a strong sense of school spirit across the Big Ten. The universities are part of Division I for sports, so whether it be football, basketball, or any other sport, expect big games and lots of cheers. There are plenty of social events, student organizations, and activities to suit a variety of interests.

Support for students typically comes in many forms such as mental health services, career counseling, and academic assistance. However, because these universities are quite large, students often need to be proactive in seeking out these resources. Nevertheless, there's a network of fellow students, alumni, and faculty who are generally supportive and encouraging.

An important point to remember is that experiences can differ greatly depending on the specific Big Ten university, the campus, the city, your major, and numerous other factors. It can be helpful to speak with current students or alumni of your intended program to get a better sense of what you can expect.

Remember that these are general traits, and each university within the Big Ten will have its own unique characteristics and strengths. Once you've identified your priorities in terms of academics, social life, location, size, and other factors, take some time to research and visit different campuses if you can. This will give you a more realistic idea of what each Big Ten university can offer.
