Meningitis vaccine – why do colleges require it?

So I was looking through some college enrollment forms and saw that some colleges require a meningitis vaccine. Does anyone know why it's so important to them and if it's a common requirement across most colleges?

The requirement for a meningitis vaccine is actually more common than you might think, and there's a very good reason for it. Meningitis is an inflammation of the protective membranes covering the brain and spinal cord, which can be caused by infection with viruses, bacteria, or other microorganisms. The bacteria that causes meningococcal disease can spread in crowded conditions, such as those found in dormitories or at large gatherings, which are common in college settings. As a result, college students, particularly those who live in dormitories, are at a slightly increased risk for meningococcal disease.

By requiring the vaccine, colleges are actively working to protect the health and well-being of their entire student population. Many states have laws or regulations that require college students to be vaccinated against certain diseases, meningitis being one of them. It’s always a good idea to check the specific requirements of each college that you're interested in, but generally, you'll find this is a routine request during the enrollment process.
