Are high school art courses beneficial for college applications even if I’m not going into art?

Okay, so I’m not planning to major in art or anything, but I really enjoy it and I’m thinking about taking more art classes next year. Will colleges see this as just a hobby, or could it actually help my application show a well-rounded interest?

Absolutely, taking high school art courses can be beneficial for your college applications, even if you aren't planning to major in art. It's important to demonstrate to colleges that you have a diverse set of interests and that you're willing to explore and develop skills beyond your intended major.

Art classes can showcase your creativity, willingness to take risks, and ability to think outside the box, all of which are valuable traits in any field. Moreover, if you excel in those art classes and include some of your best work in a portfolio, it can become a unique aspect of your application. Just remember, if you have to choose between an academic class that is relevant to your intended major or an art class, prioritize the academic class to maintain strong course rigor.

Colleges tend to look favorably upon students who challenge themselves in their areas of interest but also have a breadth of talents and hobbies. So go ahead and indulge your passion for art; it will add depth to your application and provide a fuller picture of who you are as a student and an individual.
