What do colleges typically require for admission?

Hey guys! Junior here starting to feel the heat of the college app process. I wanted to know, what’s the usual list of things that colleges require from applicants? In particular, I'm looking at a range of schools, so I'm curious about the must-haves no matter where you apply. Do all colleges require essays, or are there some that don't? What kind of recommendations are non-negotiable? Basically, what’s in the standard application package?

Hello! It's great that you're beginning to think about what you'll need for your college applications. The standard application package typically includes your high school transcript, standardized test scores (SAT or ACT), college essays, letters of recommendation, a list of extracurricular activities, and sometimes a resume.

Most colleges will require at least one essay, but some might not, or they may have optional essays. Common Application schools, for example, always require a main essay, and some have supplemental essays specific to their school.

Recommendations often come from your teachers—usually two, with at least one from a core subject teacher relevant to your intended major or strength area. A counselor letter is also commonly requested. Some schools may also consider additional recommendations from coaches, employers, or others who have worked with you in a significant capacity. Bear in mind that every college can have slightly different requirements, so it’s crucial to check the admission page of each school you're interested in to confirm.

Including a detailed list of extracurricular activities helps colleges understand what you do outside of the classroom and the level of your engagement. Always pay attention to any special requirements for programs you're applying to—like portfolios for art programs or auditions for music conservatories.

And for testing, some schools are still test-optional, meaning you don’t necessarily have to submit SAT or ACT scores. Remember to start early and keep organized to ensure you meet all the different requirements and deadlines!
