Junior here. Can anyone share what programs are good at Altoona College? What's student life like? Any details would be appreciated!
Altoona College is actually more formally known as Penn State Altoona. Being a commonwealth campus of The Pennsylvania State University, Penn State Altoona gives you access to the resources and opportunities provided by a large institution while still retaining the smaller class sizes and community-focused atmosphere of a smaller campus.
When it comes to academic programs, Penn State Altoona offers a wide variety of two and four-year degrees, but some of its standout programs include Business, Nursing, and Engineering degrees. The school also offers an Integrated degree in rail transportation (Engineering and Industrial Studies) which is quite unique and speaks to the campus's historical connection to the rail industry.
The student body at Penn State Altoona is diverse and engaged, with many opportunities to participate in extracurricular activities, sports, and student-run clubs and organizations. You'll find activities catering to diverse interests, from political clubs to intramural sports, theater, and volunteer work.
One thing to have in mind, however, is that as a commonwealth campus, Penn State Altoona is a little different from traditional colleges because students have the option to spend their first two years there (or one or three years) and then transfer to the University Park campus (main Penn State campus) to complete their degree. This is an attractive alternative for many students considering the bigger offerings at University Park campus and wanting to save some money with the slightly lower costs at Altoona.
Campus life is fairly rich, and you're likely to see a lot of close-knit community vibes due to its somewhat smaller size. Life at Penn State Altoona often revolves around campus events, whether they're sponsored by the college itself or enacted by student organizations. Given its location, outdoor activities are also popular due to proximity to outdoors attractions such as State Parks and hiking trails.
Do keep in mind that this is a general overview. I would recommend reaching out directly to the college or current students for more specific details.
