What are common elements across different college admission requirements?

When looking at colleges, I get stressed by the variety of requirements. Can someone lay out the basic elements that are almost always needed in college applications? SAT/ACT, GPA, essays, anything else?

I understand how overwhelming the admissions process can seem with each college having a slightly different set of requirements. However, there are indeed some commonalities. Nearly all colleges will ask for your high school transcripts to review your GPA and course rigor. Standardized test scores, such as the SAT or ACT, are often required, although some schools have adopted test-optional policies. Essays are a universal component as well; they provide an opportunity for you to showcase your personality and writing skills. Letters of recommendation are typically requested to give insight into your academic and personal character. Additionally, a list of your extracurricular activities will help admissions officers understand your interests and commitments outside of the classroom.

In summary, while there will be variances, focusing on these core elements — transcripts, test scores, essays, letters of recommendation, and extracurriculars — will cover most of what colleges are looking for in applicants.
