Ideal Military Branch for Shooting at Longer Distances?

Hi, I'm really into shooting, and I hear that different military branches may have different proficiency requirements for shooting at certain distances. Specifically, does anyone know which could have me shooting at around 500 yards? Just curious and couldn't find a lot about this online.

Yes, most branches of the military have options for roles that require longer distance shooting. However, the roles that probably involve the most training and practice at that distance are snipers and designated marksmen.

The Marine Corps is well-known for emphasizing marksmanship skills, to the extent that every marine, regardless of role, is trained to accurately fire up to 500 yards. Therefore, if you want to ensure that you'll receive the opportunity to shoot at long distances as part of your role, the Marine Corps could be a good fit.

If you're interested in precision shooting, you might consider a role as a sniper. Snipers in all branches of the military can be trained to shoot at much longer distances than 500 yards. Again, in terms of reputation, the Marines are highly regarded in this visual area, as are the Army's Green Berets, Rangers, and Navy SEALs.

Additionally, each branch has roles for designated marksmen, who serve in infantry squads and provide precision shooting. This role might also offer the opportunity to train and shoot at longer distances. Army Designated Marksmen, Marine Corps Squad Advanced Marksmen, Navy SEAL snipers, and the Air Force's Pararescuemen are a few examples of such roles.

It's important to keep in mind that these roles usually require passing rigorous physical and mental tests and training. Also, serving in the military involves many duties beyond shooting, even for roles that emphasize marksmanship.

Please do plenty of research and speak with recruiters or current military personnel to ensure you have a full understanding of the commitments involved in any military role.
