What exactly counts as 'honors' for the Common App?

Hey everyone, I'm filling out the Common App and I'm at the Honors section. I've got a few academic awards and a couple from music competitions. Would all of those count as 'honors,' or is this section only for strictly academic accolades? Would love to hear what honors you guys included!

Hello there! Great question, and it's one that many students have when filling out the Common App. In the 'Honors' section, you can include any awards or recognitions that are of significance to you, whether they're academic or not. You're certainly encouraged to include your academic awards, but your achievements in music competitions count as well! Colleges appreciate students with diverse talents and interests. Think about any recognitions you've received that you're particularly proud of or that are from a well-recognized organization or competition, whether that's being named MVP on your sports team or placing in a state science fair. A useful rule of thumb is to prioritize the awards you've received that relate to your potential major or highlight your specific talents. For example, if you're planning to pursue a degree in music, those music competition awards are quite relevant. The main point here is to showcase your accomplishments and to give admissions officers a well-rounded view of who you are, what you excel in, and what's important to you. Also, don't be shy about including anything that sets you apart from your peers, even if it's not a first-place finish. Consistency, growth, or a unique personal achievement can all make an impact. Best of luck with your application!
