What are 'stretch schools' and should I include them in my applications?

I have been advised to include a couple of 'stretch schools' in my applications but I'm not entirely sure what that means. Can anyone explain what a stretch school is? And why it might be beneficial to add those to my list?

Sure, happy to help! A "stretch school" is a term used to describe colleges or universities that are considered to reach, or aspirational, in your college application process. It typically refers to schools where your academic credentials (like your grade point average or standardized test scores) fall below the school's average for admitted students. It doesn't mean you won't be admitted, but the chances are relatively lower compared to a "match" or "safety" school.

Including stretch schools in your application list can be beneficial for a few reasons:

1. Chance of Acceptance: While it might be a long shot, there's always a chance you might get in! Admissions can be unpredictable and sometimes students with lower scores do get admitted.

2. Personal Growth: Applying to a stretch school can drive you to put forward your best work in your application, pushing you to reflect on your goals, achievements, and aspirations in a deeper way.

3. Holistic Review: Many selective schools take a holistic approach to admissions. Therefore, even if your grades or test scores aren't within the middle50% range, your extracurriculars, essays, letters of recommendation, and other factors could stand out.

Remember though to have a balanced range of colleges in your application list. This should also include "match" schools (where your credentials align closely with the average of admitted students) and "safety" schools (where your credentials exceed the average of admitted students). This will help you ensure a viable college option come decision time.Just a heads up: Don't apply to a stretch school simply because of its prestige. Make sure it's a college where you can physically, mentally, and financially thrive, and that it aligns well with your intended major or career path. Best of luck with your applications!
