Average PSAT Score?

So, I'm gearing up for the PSAT and I want to see how I might measure up. What's the typical, or average, score one might get on the PSAT?

The PSAT/NMSQT has a total score range from 320 to 1520. The score is a combination of two sections: Reading/Writing and Math, each scored on a scale from 160 to 760.

The average PSAT score typically falls around the midpoint of the scale, which is around 920 (460 per section). However, remember that average scores can vary from year to year and also depending on the grade of the test takers. In general, students tend to score higher as they progress from 10th to 11th grade due to increased familiarity with the material and testing experience.

It's also important to keep in mind that colleges do not consider PSAT scores in admissions decisions. The main uses of the PSAT are for practice for the SAT and qualifying for the National Merit Scholarship. You'll have to score significantly above average - typically in the top 1% - to qualify for National Merit. However, the exact cutoff varies by state.

Lastly, don't stress too much about your PSAT score. Use it as a tool to identify areas where you can improve before you sit for the actual SAT. Your preparation for the PSAT, which includes taking full-length practice tests, could also serve as a good start to your SAT preparation. Be sure to review your wrong answers and understand your mistakes so you can avoid them in the future. Good luck with your studies!
