What's up with MIT's deferral rate?

Hello, so I've been thinking a lot about applying to MIT and was curious about their deferral rate. Has anybody here been deferred from MIT before and what does this mean for my application if I am deferred? Is there any data or insights available about what might increase my chances of eventual acceptance in the regular decision pool?

MIT, like many schools, utilizes deferrals for students who apply Early Action. Essentially, a deferral is when MIT decides not to make a final admission decision during the Early Action round. Instead, they wait until the Regular Decision round. There is no set deferral rate at MIT as it can vary from year to year based on the applicant pool's strength. If you are deferred, it means that your application will be reevaluated alongside the Regular Decision applicants. This can be beneficial as it gives you more time to strengthen your application with updates like strong first-semester/term grade reports, recent accomplishments, or glowing letters of recommendation.

While MIT doesn't release specific deferral rates or data, it's important to remember the overall acceptance rate at MIT is approximately 4.8%, and there is no guarantee that being deferred means eventual acceptance. Strengthening your application for potential reconsideration involves pro-actively showcasing any improvement or noteworthy accomplishment since your initial application. This might include progress in projects, boosts in academic performance, or significant extracurricular achievement. You should update MIT on these advancements. However, remember that demonstrating your match with MIT's known values and culture, both academically and personally, is crucial. This can be conveyed via an update letter, showcasing your sustained interest and understanding of the institution, and your determination to contribute and gain from its community. While waiting for a final decision, continue working on other applications to ensure you have a diversity of pathways lined up for your future! MIT is just one of many fine institutions providing excellent education opportunities.
