Comparison: Pitt vs VA Tech

Anyone care to weigh in on the Pitt versus VA Tech? I'm drawn to both for their strong STEM programs, but I can't decide which one would suit me better. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Both Pitt and VA Tech are fantastic schools, particularly known for their STEM programs. That said, the deciding factor here might be the environment in which you can imagine yourself thriving.

Starting with the University of Pittsburgh (Pitt), it is located in a city environment, which can offer a rich cultural experience and plenty of opportunities for internships and jobs, particularly in the tech and healthcare industries, given the presence of companies like Google, Duolingo and UPMC. If you're interested in healthcare, Pitt has a strong connection with UPMC, one of the top hospital systems in the country. Pitt is also part of the Association of American Universities, an elite group of research universities in North America.

Virginia Tech (VA Tech), on the other hand, is located in a more rural college town (Blacksburg). The environment can be quieter and more close-knit which some students favor. VA Tech is very strong in fields like Engineering and Agriculture. Moreover, VA Tech's Corps of Cadets may provide unique leadership and military opportunities if that is something that interests you.

Another factor worth considering is the size of the student body: Pitt has around 24,500 undergraduate students, while VA Tech has approximately 38,000.

Keep in mind that the best college for you isn't merely about ranking or reputation but rather about fit - how well the college jives with your personal interests, career goals, and living preference. Do you see yourself in a bustling city with easy access to tech and health companies, or does a quieter setting with a strong community intrigue you more? Think about where you'll be happiest and most productive because this is where you'll do your best work. Good luck with your decision!
