Choosing the right college for Computer Science in Washington

Hey peeps, I'm a junior right now and doing a bit of early college research. I'm quite interested in Computer Science and I live in Washington. So, does anyone know about the top colleges in Washington that excel in Computer Science programs? Is it better to go for the ones with well-known programs or the one that feels like the best fit? Thanks in advance!

Hi there! It sounds like you've got two factors to consider in your college search process: program strength and personal fit. Both are indeed significant.

When it comes to highly regarded computer science programs in Washington, the University of Washington (UW) in Seattle stands out as an excellent choice. The school's Paul G. Allen School of Computer Science & Engineering is nationally recognized for its strength in various areas of computer science.

In addition, you might also want to look into Washington State University (WSU). Though it may not be as internationally renowned as UW, it has a well-respected Program in Computer Science.

Another one to check out is Seattle University which has a respected Computer Science department as well. Although smaller than the previous two, it provides a very intimate learning experience with a small student-faculty ratio.

You should absolutely consider the reputation and resources of these programs, but making sure a college is a good fit for you personally is just as crucial. Each of these schools has a different campus culture, location, size, and array of extracurricular activities. I'd encourage you to visit these campuses, if possible, to see where you feel the most comfortable, welcome, and excited about your future.

Though attending a school with a top-ranked program can offer opportunities for research, networking, and internships, don’t overlook the value of being in an environment where you feel you can thrive. Success in college often stems as much from engagement and motivation as it does from the quality of your coursework.

After all, your college experience will be shaped not only by your academic work but also by friendships, extracurricular involvement, and personal growth. You want to choose a place where you feel you can excel in all these areas. Best of luck with your college search process!
