Searching for summer opportunities! (Georgetown University)

Has anyone been to any of Georgetown University's summer programs for high schoolers? If yes, could you tell me more about your experience? Trying to scout out ways to make the best of my next summer vacation. Thanks in advance!

Sure thing! Georgetown University offers a variety of summer programs for high school students, all aimed at providing participants with a taste of college life and some specialized exposure to various fields of study. Here's what some students have shared about their experiences:

The high school classes at Georgetown usually run for 1-5 weeks, allowing you to deeply delve into a subject area. You will learn under the guidance of Georgetown professors and instructors, which is a great opportunity to experience college-level coursework. Students reported that the courses are challenging but rewarding, providing in-depth insight into their chosen subject.

When it comes to staying on campus (if the program isn't online due to ongoing considerations like the pandemic), students have mentioned enjoying experiencing a taste of college life! You'll likely stay in one of the university's residence halls and eat in the dining hall, providing a fairly authentic college living experience.

Outside of class times, there are planned activities and plenty of free time. Students have commented that they made a lot of friends during their stay, both in and out of their classes. This can be an excellent opportunity to meet like-minded students from all over the world and expand your perspectives beyond your hometown.

Georgetown's location in Washington DC provides plenty of exciting opportunities as well. The city's cultural hotspots, historical landmarks, and myriad cafes and shops add value to the program as you can absorb a small slice of life in the city. Some students were able to visit the Smithsonian, take short strolls along the Potomac, and enjoy local DC attractions on their days off.

Before committing to such a program, one thing you may want to consider is the selectivity of the program—you'll benefit more from selective programs that make extensive use of an admissions process. Also, remember that while these programs can be great for exploring your interests, they are not going to substantially increase your chances of admission to Georgetown or other colleges, as they are open to any high school student able to pay the fee. Please note, while these programs do have a cost associated with them, some offer financial aid to students who demonstrate need, so don't let the price tag immediately deter you if cost is a concern. It's always a good idea to reach out to the program coordinators for more information on this.

Lastly, you should definitely consider your interests, academic or otherwise—spending a summer doing something meaningful to you is just as important as attending a program at a prominent university like Georgetown.Hope this helps you in your decision-making process!
