Benefits of free college for military dependents in Texas?

Hey guys, since my parent is a veteran, I'm seeking advice on how the college tuition benefit for military dependents works, specifically here in Texas. Are the benefits the same across all colleges in Texas or are there variations? Could someone provide a detailed overview or point me to some credible sources?

Military dependents in Texas qualify for the Hazlewood Act benefit, a State of Texas benefit that provides up to 150 hours of tuition exemption, including most fee charges, at public institutions of higher education in Texas. This does not include living expenses, books, or supply fees. It's applicable to Texas public universities, community colleges, and state technical colleges.

This benefit can be transferred from a veteran to their dependent under the "Hazlewood Legacy Act." To be eligible for this benefit transfer, the dependent must:

1. Be classified as a resident of Texas.

2. Be the biological child, stepchild, adopted child, or claimed dependent in the current or previous tax year.

3. Be 25 years or younger on the first day of the semester or term for which the exemption is claimed.

4. Make satisfactory academic progress in the degree or certificate program.

The veteran must also meet certain criteria, such as having served at least 181 days of active military duty and having been honorably discharged or separated from the armed forces.

Please keep in mind, the Hazlewood Act and Legacy Act can't be used concurrently – it’s either the veteran uses the benefit, or the dependent.

For more information, you could check out the Texas Veterans Commission website, or reach out to a Veteran Services officer at the Texas college or university you're interested in. They would be able to provide you with the most accurate and comprehensive information about how the Hazlewood Act applies to their institution.
