How Good is A&M Really?

I've heard a lot of hype about A&M, but as a high school rising junior trying to make sense of my options, I'd really appreciate some first-hand insight. What makes this place special? What's good about it academically and socially?

Texas A&M is well-known for its strong sense of community and traditions, which are encapsulated in its spirit of the "12th Man". The term represents the school's supportive and engaged student body, something you don't always find at large universities. In particular, students rave about their school spirit, particularly around sports events.

Academically, Texas A&M has a solid reputation, especially in fields such as Engineering, Agriculture and Natural Resources, and Business. For instance, the Dwight Look College of Engineering is nationally recognized and offers a myriad of concentrations from petroleum to environmental engineering. A&M's emphasis on research provides undergraduates with ample opportunities to be involved in exciting projects under the guidance of distinguished faculty.

One of the unique aspects of Texas A&M is their Corps of Cadets program. It's one of the largest uniformed student bodies outside of the service academies and gives students a hands-on leadership development program rooted in a military tradition, although it's not required service after graduation.

Socially, there are over 1,000 clubs and organizations, so you can be sure there are plenty of ways to get involved outside of class and find your community within the larger student body. The town of College Station is a quintessential college town with all the amenities you could need as a student.

Lastly, A&M is part of the SEC, so you'll experience big-time college athletics, especially when it comes to football. Game day on campus is a major event and a cherished part of the school tradition.

Just as with any school, be sure to do your homework and decide if the environment is right for you personally. But overall, Texas A&M is seen as a school with a firm academic reputation, a supportive and enthusiastic community, and a deeply ingrained sense of tradition.
