What's up with military-focused 2-year colleges in Alabama?

I'm from Alabama and I heard there are some 2-year colleges here that are military focused? Is this legit? Does anyone have any experience or know someone who does and can share more info?

Indeed, there are two-year colleges, known as community or junior colleges, that offer military-focused programs in Alabama, and certainly, they are legitimate!

A prominent one is Marion Military Institute (MMI) in Marion, Alabama. MMI is recognized as the official state military college of Alabama and is one of only four military junior colleges in the United States. MMI offers a two-year leadership development program specifically designed for students interested in transferring to senior military colleges or service academies.

The institution is known to offer a number of programs like the Service Academy Program (SAP), Early Commissioning Program (ECP), and the Marine Corps Platoon Leaders Class (PLC), which are all geared towards preparing students for active military service or furthering their education in military schools. For example, students who participate in the ECP have the opportunity to commission as second lieutenants in the U.S. Army Reserve or the Army National Guard while still enrolled in college, which comes with a number of financial and career benefits.

Additionally, MMI's academics are quite commendable. They offer a robust liberal arts curriculum, offering courses in natural sciences, social sciences, arts, and humanities. Students receive an Associate's degree upon completion of the program, preparing them for a smooth transition to a four-year institution if they choose that path.

Overall, experiences in these military-focused community colleges can be unique and rewarding, and they certainly equip the students with discipline, leadership skills, and a sense of service, which can be advantageous in the military service and beyond. It's a unique opportunity for students interested in military service to receive an education tailored to their aspirations.
