Cal Poly Animal Science

I've been exploring the Animal Science Program at Cal Poly. Can anybody tell me more about their labs, hands-on experience, or anything else special about the program that you wouldn't get at another college?

Absolutely! Cal Poly's Animal Science Department is one of the largest in the United States in terms of undergraduate enrollment and it is well-regarded for its "learn by doing" philosophy. Here are some specific components about their program that set them apart:

1. Classic and Molecular Biology Animal Labs: These labs expose you to both conventional and modern techniques used in the study of animal biology. The lab works are designed to reinforce the subjects you learn in class and with an added emphasis on molecular biology techniques and applications.

2. Intensive Hands-On Experience: Cal Poly Animal Science's program really leans into their motto of "learn by doing." Students are given opportunities to manage livestock enterprises, participate in research projects, and work in the campus meat processing center, dairy processing plant, and equine center. Not every program gives you the chance to get such direct, hands-on experience with the subjects you're studying.

3. Enterprise Projects: Students have an opportunity to participate in Enterprise Projects where students simulate owning a livestock enterprise. This exposes students to real-world scenarios and provides them with practical experiences in the animal industry.

4. Livestock Judging and Show Teams: Cal Poly Animal Science has one of the most reputable livestock judging programs in the country. In addition, being on a show team (beef, swine, sheep, or dairy cattle) gives students the opportunity to show the animals they've raised at county fairs and other livestock shows around the state.
