Free College for Military Spouses, Is It Real?

What's the deal with the so-called 'free college for military spouses'? As a future military wife, I heard that some colleges might offer free education. Is this for real or just a myth? Help me out, folks!

Yes, there are programs that offer financial assistance for military spouses to attend college, but they might not necessarily cover all costs or apply to all schools.

For U.S. military spouses, the My Career Advancement Account (MyCAA) scholarship is a popular option. Administered by the Department of Defense, MyCAA provides up to $4,000 of tuition assistance to eligible military spouses. The scholarship can be used for a variety of training programs or degrees at any accredited school, though it is limited to spouses of active service members in pay grades E-1 to E-6, W-1 to W-2, and O-1 to O-3.

However, be aware that the scholarship has a maximum yearly cap, and it doesn’t cover all educational expenses. Materials or additional fees might not be included, and certain types of education, such as a bachelor’s degree or a master's degree, typically exceed the MyCAA's lifetime limit.

There may also be additional scholarship opportunities at individual universities, or through organizations supporting military families. It's a good idea to check directly with potential colleges or universities to see if they offer any scholarships or discounts for military spouses.

While "free" might not be entirely accurate, there are certainly resources available to help decrease the cost of college for military spouses. Be sure to do your research and apply for as many scholarships as possible to maximize your funding, and don't hesitate to look into opportunities that are unrelated to the military as well, to supplement the programs described above.

Good luck!
