Is going to college after military service a good idea?

Hey everyone, I'm a high school junior and I've been thinking of going into the military right after graduation. However, I do value education and am considering going to college after my service. Can anyone share their experiences or advice on attending college after military service? Thanks a bunch!

Absolutely, many people choose to go to college after serving in the military and find it to be a worthwhile experience.

Firstly, it's crucial to note that serving in the military can provide you with real-world experience, leadership skills, discipline, and more. These will be immensely valuable in your college studies. Moreover, you may come with the added maturity to handle your academic responsibilities seriously, be more goal-oriented and make the most of your college experience.

Another major benefit is the financial aspect. The military offers several education benefits and programs, such as the Post-9/11 GI Bill, that can cover all or a substantial chunk of your tuition fees at public colleges and universities. This would make college more affordable.

The transition from military to college life can be challenging, especially adjusting to a different structure and routine, but there are many supports in place. A number of colleges have Veteran Service Offices or similar programs designed to assist veterans in adjusting to college life and reach academic success. They offer resources like tutoring, counseling, priority registration and more.

However, the decision to go right into the military after high school versus going to college first depends on your personal goals, ambitions, and circumstances. Do solid research to understand what pathway aligns best with your life plans. It's a personal decision that should be made after plenty of thought and discussion with trusted adults in your life. Consider shadowing a person in the military job you're interested in and talking with veterans about their experiences. Similarly, consider visiting some college campuses or talking to current college students to get a sense of what the college experience is like.
