Making Sense of GWU's Course Schedule

I'm aiming to submit my application for George Washington University but I'm having a hard time making sense of their course schedule. How is it organized? And how flexible can I be with choosing my classes as a freshman?

Like many universities, George Washington University organizes their course schedules by academic term, course department, course level, and course number. Each class also typically includes a professor's name, class meeting days and times, class location, and descriptions about the course content.

As a freshman, your flexibility in choosing classes can depend on a few factors. If you've declared a major, you might have certain requirements or prerequisites that you need to fulfill. However, GWU also has a general education program, called the GWU Columbian College of Arts and Sciences (CCAS) G-PAC, which allows students to explore different academic areas and provides flexibility in course selection.

For instance, while first-year students are required to complete a first-year writing seminar, they have the opportunity to choose from a wide array of topics, from contemporary health issues to globalization. Beyond required courses, you have the freedom to pursue electives or start completing the requirements for your intended major.

That being said, course availability can affect the degree of flexibility you have. Particularly popular or required courses may fill quickly, so it's essential to have backup options when you register for classes. Some courses might also only be offered in certain semesters. If you're interested in a specific class, be sure to check if it's available in the semester you're planning for. You can also consult with academic advisors who can provide guidance based on your individual circumstances and interests. Lastly, don't be afraid to explore outside of your comfort zone! College is a great time to delve into different academic areas, so consider taking a class or two that sparks your curiosity, even if it's not directly linked to your major. You never know what you might discover about your own interests and potential career paths.
