Just how tough is anthropology?

Hi folks, I'm a high school junior thinking about possible majors. I've always been intrigued by different cultures and human evolution. Is Anthropology a hard major? What are some of the challenges I might face if I opt for it? Any insights would be very much appreciated!

Anthropology can be both fascinating and challenging, much like any other discipline. However, the "difficulty" of anthropology can depend on a variety of factors including individual strengths, interests, and the program you choose to pursue.The study of anthropology often requires a broad set of skills ranging from scientific reasoning, critical thinking, to good writing and communication abilities. This breadth and depth of study can be challenging but also enriching.

Understanding and interpreting anthropological data can be complex. It often involves dealing with abstract concepts and theories, learning new terminologies, and sometimes grappling with unfamiliar cultural norms and behaviors.One of the challenges many anthropology undergraduates face is fieldwork. Many programs have a fieldwork component where you may be required to conduct original research, typically requiring you to engage closely with a community or culture different from your own over a considerable period of time.

Moreover, be prepared for lots of reading and writing. Many classes involve vigorous discussion around reading assignments, not to mention a plethora of papers that aim to cultivate your critical thinking and writing skills.
