Curious about the Michigan Math and Science Scholars program

Hey everyone, just wondering if there's anyone here who's been through the Michigan Math and Science Scholars program? I'm pretty good with numbers and all that jazz, so I'm curious about what this program entails exactly? Thanks in advance!

Michigan Math and Science Scholars (MMSS) is a fantastic summer program held at the University of Michigan. It's a pre-college outreach program designed to introduce high school students to various fields and real-life applications of mathematics, science, and engineering.

Classes are two weeks long, and each week is a separate session, so you could potentially explore two different topics. The classes cover a wide range of disciplines, including astrophysics, computer science, biomedical engineering, and more. This variety offers you the opportunity to either deepen your understanding of a field you're already passionate about or to explore something completely new.

When it comes to the set-up, classes are very interactive. They aren't lectures but more like mini research projects. You complete experiments, solve problems, and engage in group activities. The idea is to integrate students in a hands-on learning approach, giving you an insight into how these fields operate in the real world.

Additionally, there might be opportunities to work on a group project and present findings at the end of your session, which can be a great experience to include on your college applications. Plus, you'll be gaining invaluable networking opportunities with professors and peers who share your passion for STEM.

Just remember, whilst the academic side is paramount, there will also be social activities to provide balance. This makes MMSS not only an academically enriching experience, but also a chance to meet new people and experience campus life.Do be aware that there is a cost associated with the program, which includes classes, housing, meals, and activities. However, there is financial aid available for students who demonstrate need, so don't let this discourage you from applying.

Make sure to apply early as slots for the program often get filled up quickly.
