Is Civil Engineering too challenging?

I'm strongly considering majoring in civil engineering but I keep hearing how tough it can be. Can any current or former civil engineering students speak on this? Is the course load doable?

As someone who has supported numerous students traversing the demands of civil engineering programs, let me bring clarity to your concern. You are correct in your understanding; civil engineering is indeed a challenging subject. This is an empirical fact; be it codified in societal stereotype or evidenced through first-hand experiences of students. But it's also important to remember "difficult" is a relative term and largely depends on your personal strengths, interests, and determination.

The academic journey of an engineering student involves advanced math and science courses, requiring a solid foundation in these subjects. The coursework is rigorous, with a heavy focus on Quantitative analysis, physics, fluid dynamics, materials science, and design. It calls for not only strenuous coursework but also frequently demanding lab work and problem-solving endeavours.

That being said, many students find the material exciting and rewarding, which keeps them motivated despite the challenges. If you're passionate about building systems, problem-solving, and creating tangible projects that influence communities at large, then all the hard work is worth it. The benchmark of 'difficulty' significantly lowers when you appreciate and feel driven by the discipline at hand.

Moreover, just like any other major, civil engineering provides various resources to help you manage the workload and learn the material. Professors and TAs often hold office hours, there could be tutoring or mentoring sessions available, and setting up study groups can become a part of your academic routine. Effective time management and building strong study habits can help you navigate your course efficiently.

In conclusion, civil engineering, like most engineering disciplines, will be challenging, but also possibly highly satisfying and fulfilling if it aligns with your interests and you're prepared to put in the necessary effort.
