How to evaluate top US public high schools?

Hey everyone, I'm trying to grasp a better understanding about the quality of high schools in the US. What metrics or factors are generally considered when ranking public high schools in the US? Is it purely based on academics, or do they consider other aspects like extracurriculars, teacher perfomance, and student services too? All insights are appreciated!

There are certainly a variety of factors that go into evaluating and ranking top U.S. public high schools, and it can be a complex process as these factors vary in importance depending on the source of the rankings.

Firstly, academics often have substantial weight in high school rankings. This usually includes metrics such as standardized test scores (the average SAT and ACT scores of the students), AP/IB participation and pass rates, and the school's average graduation rate. Schools with a high percentage of students succeeding in rigorous course work (like AP/IB classes) and graduating on time tend to be rated higher.

Additionally, many ranking systems also look at the student-teacher ratio, as a smaller ratio can often mean more individual attention for students. The quality of teachers can also be taken into account; this can involve considerations like their experience level, their educational background, and sometimes even student and parent reviews.

Another aspect that is commonly evaluated is college readiness. This might include factors such as how many students go on to four-year colleges, and how well the school prepares students for college-level work.

However, academics and college readiness aren’t the only factors considered. A school's environment can also play a role in its ranking. This can involve looking at things like diversity (both racial/ethnic, and economic) and surveys regarding the overall culture and feeling of safety at the school.

While extracurriculars are an important part of a high school experience, they're harder to quantify and don't usually play as large a role in rankings. That said, schools with a wide array of extracurricular options may be more attractive to students and parents.

On the point of student services, things like guidance counseling and college advising can be quite important, though they're also difficult to measure and compare across schools. That being said, a school with a dedicated college advisement staff may be more successful in preparing students for their next steps.

It’s important to remember that rankings should not be the only determinant when evaluating the quality of a high school. Additionally, what makes a high school "top" can vary greatly depending on the needs and goals of the specific student. Cultivating a well-rounded view - considering academics, student life, supports for students, and so on - is crucial.
