Need Recommendations for Top Colleges in Pennsylvania

I'm a PA resident and planning to stay in-state for college (tuition reasons and because I love the Keystone State!). Which colleges in PA should I be focusing on? Especially interested in strong pre-med programs if that helps.

It's fantastic you're considering staying within your home state for college, Pennsylvania has quite a variety of excellent institutions! Given your interest in pre-med, there are a few particularly strong universities in the state that you may want to consider.

1. University of Pennsylvania (UPenn): Likely the most famous college in the state, UPenn has a renowned biology and medical program, and their close association with the Perelman School of Medicine provides ample opportunities for exposure, experience, and research in the medical field.

2. Carnegie Mellon University (CMU): Although CMU is known for its computer science and engineering programs, their Science and Humanities Scholars Program is also excellent for Biomedical Science, offering the opportunity to do research in labs and broaden your academic horizon with humanities classes.

3. Swarthmore College: A smaller, liberal arts college with a strong pre-med track. Swarthmore will provide you not only with the rigorous science coursework necessary for pre-med, but also a broad liberal arts education. Its size allows for strong faculty-student relationships which can be crucial for letters of recommendation.

4. Haverford College: Another liberal arts college known for its rigorous academics and close-knit community. Haverford offers a Health Studies program which covers health and society, biochemistry, and biology. The college also has a close relationship with the University of Pennsylvania due to its location.

5. University of Pittsburgh (Pitt): Through their Guaranteed Admit (GA) medical program, if you meet certain criteria, you can secure a medical school spot while still an undergraduate! Pitt has robust science and research programs and also benefits from the close proximity to the prestigious UPMC health system.

Remember, your choice should also factor in things like the size of the school, location, and campus culture, so try to visit these schools if you can to get a feel of the campus life. Good luck with your research and application process!
