What do colleges expect in terms of SAT or ACT nowadays?

Hey folks, I’m starting to get ready for college applications and wondering what the deal is with the SAT/ACT. Are there a lot of colleges that don’t require the SAT or ACT anymore? Just trying to figure out if they’re still a big part of the college admissions equation or if times are changing.

Hi there! I can understand why you’re curious about the SAT/ACT role in college admissions—there's been quite a bit of change in recent years. Indeed, many colleges have adopted a test-optional policy, which means that you are not required to submit SAT or ACT scores as part of your application. This trend has been accelerated by the pandemic, but some schools are making it a more permanent policy.

However, it's important to note that while scores might not be required at many schools, a strong SAT or ACT score can still bolster your application, especially at competitive institutions. If you're a competitive applicant academically, good test scores can be an additional asset.

That being said, if your scores aren't reflective of your capabilities, or if you’re unable to take the tests due to extenuating circumstances, the test-optional policy can work in your favor. It's also worth noting that while the test policies might be relaxed, the importance of other components of your application, like your essays, grades, and extracurricular activities, has increased.

Be sure to prepare thoroughly for each part of your application to make the strongest possible case for admission. Check specific college websites or with admissions offices for their standardized test policies to plan accordingly. Best of luck with your preparations!
