Sup, quick question... I didn't do so hot on a couple of my AP exams and was wondering if it's possible to cancel these scores? Or do I just have to suck it up and let colleges see them when I send my AP scores?
Hello! Yes, you actually can cancel your AP exam scores, but it's important to understand what it entails. When you cancel an AP exam score, it is permanently removed from your record. As in, it's gone: you can't reverse it, get a copy of it later, or send it to a college. Would-be rescinded scores have to be requested via a written, signed and snail-mailed document to the College Board that clearly states which scores you want to cancel and from which specific AP exams. There's no charge for this service.
However, keep in mind that cancelling scores is a bit of a nuclear option and there's usually no reason to do so. The choice is pretty much in your hands in terms of reporting your AP scores to colleges. Many colleges allow you to self-report AP scores on your application, and you get to choose which scores you want to report. You only need to send official AP score reports to the college you're going to attend, and even then, it's often after you've been accepted.
Also, I'd say, solid performance in an AP class still counts in your favor, even if you didn't excel on the exam itself. Colleges are far more interested in your course grades than your AP scores. They use them mainly for placement purposes and, in some cases, to award college credit. So before you rush to cancel anything, remember that you generally have quite a bit of control over which scores colleges see. Just thought I'd point that out!
