Understanding the APES Curve

Hello! I'm taking AP Environmental Science and I've heard that scoring on this exam is depending on the 'APES Curve.' Can someone explain what this is and how it impacts my score?

The term "APES Curve" essentially refers to how your raw score on the AP Environmental Science (APES) exam translates into your final AP score of 1-5. When people mention this "curve," they're discussing the way the College Board scales the scores every year.

Your raw score on the APES exam is the total number of multiple-choice questions you answered correctly plus the points you earned from free-response questions. This raw score is then converted to a scaled score (that's the 1-5 score), and this conversion is done slightly differently each year to account for variations in each test's difficulty level.

It's important to know that the curve is designed to ensure consistency in AP scores across different years. For example, a score of 4 one year should represent the same level of knowledge and ability, irrespective of the specific test's difficulty. Because of this, a harder test version will have a more generous curve (you can miss more questions and still get a 5), while an easier test version will have a less generous curve (you would need to miss fewer questions to get a 5).

While it's tempting to obsess over the curve, the best approach is to simply focus on mastering the content and skills covered in your APES class. Practice with past exams and review your areas of weakness. Curve or no curve, strong preparation is the key to doing well on the APES exam.
