American Equivalents of A-Levels?

Okay, so this maybe might sound a little confused, but I'm an international student (UK-based) looking to apply to US colleges. Problem is, I've only taken A-Levels here and I'm not totally sure how they stack up against your standard American qualifications. Would these be considered more like AP courses or more like SAT subject tests?

Hello! In terms of U.S. comparisons, A-Levels are considered most similar to Advanced Placement (AP) courses. AP courses cover college-level material similar to A-Levels, and culminate in a final exam at the end of the year. High scores on these exams can earn college credit or allow students to opt out of certain introductory courses in U.S. colleges.

SAT subject tests, on the other hand, were additional standardized tests offered by the College Board. These were single, one-hour long tests on specific subjects, whereas A-Level courses and AP involve a course of study over several months, which have since been ended by the College Board.

In summary, if you're looking for an equivalent to A-Levels in the U.S. system, AP courses would be the most accurate comparison. This is because both involve an extended in-depth study in specific subjects, with a nationally standardized exam at the end.

However, keep in mind that SAT subject tests have been discontinued as of January 2021, so you won't need to worry about considering them in your academic profile.

I must mention that U.S. colleges will be familiar with your A-Level curriculum and grades. The admissions offices will have international admissions experts who understand the equivalence of A-Levels and other international qualifications to the U.S. system.
