MIT's Fly-In Program Experience?

Anybody out there ever participated in MIT's fly-in program? I'm intrigued and would love to hear about your experiences, and how it may have affected your overall application or decision to apply to MIT. What's the process like for applying?

I'm happy to give some insight into MIT's fly-in program! The program, also known as WISE (Weekend Immersion in Science and Engineering), is typically a two-day event on MIT's campus designed to give prospective students an inside view of what life is like as an MIT student. Participants meet current MIT students, faculty, and advisors, attend department overviews and classes, interact with student groups, and even experience MIT's residential and dining life.

Many participants walk away with a better understanding of MIT's unique culture and a clearer vision of what they would like to do if they attended the school. Additionally, interacting directly with the MIT community can help when it comes to writing your essays, as you'll have specific experiences to reference, which can demonstrate your interest in the school.

The application process for WISE is similar to a condensed college application. You'll need to fill out an application form that asks for basic demographic and academic information, and you'll usually have to answer a few short essay questions about your interest in MIT and the STEM fields. Keep in mind that these programs can be quite competitive, so you'll want to put as much effort into this application as you would a regular college application.

Finally, remember that while attending can give you a good idea of whether MIT is the right fit for you, participation in a fly-in program doesn't guarantee admission. Keep working hard on all aspects of your application, but don't stress too much -- remember, the whole point of the fly-in program is for you to explore, learn, and enjoy!
