What's the deal with meal plans at Indiana University Bloomington?

Hey everyone! I got accepted into IUB and I'm pretty stoked. But I've been hearing some mixed reviews about their meal plans. Could someone help me understand what the options are and maybe which one is better for a freshman living in the dorms? Also, what's the food like? Any help appreciated, thanks!

Response: Congratulations on your acceptance to Indiana University Bloomington! Meal plans can indeed be a tad complex, so I'm here to help clarify for you.

At IUB, they offer a range of meal plan options catering to different student needs. For students living in the dorms like yourself, the meal plans are divided into three categories: 'Unlimited plans', 'Block Meal plans', and 'I-BUCKS'.1. Unlimited Meal Plans: Exactly as the name suggests, these plans provide you with unlimited entries to any of the dining locations on campus every week. This option is ideal if you like to eat multiple small meals a day.

2. Block Meal Plans: They offer you a fixed number of meals per semester. If you don't eat as often, or like to cook sometimes, this could save you some money.

3. I-BUCKS: I-BUCKS are basically dining credits that you could use across dining locations. They're more flexible, but the meals are typically pricier than if you have unlimited or block plans. As a freshman, you would probably be better off starting with an unlimited meal plan or a block meal plan, as they give the most value for the most consistent eating schedule. However, you can always change your meal plan if your diet or eating habits change.

In terms of food quality, it can be subjective as it largely depends on personal preferences. A variety of meal options covering different dietary preferences like vegan, vegetarian, gluten-free, etc., are usually provided. You can expect a range of choices from traditional American comfort food, pizza and pasta, to global cuisines. As in all dining halls, some meals will be hit or miss, but there's usually enough variety to keep things interesting.

Keep in mind that the best thing to do in your first few weeks is explore all the different dining halls and find your personal favorites. Don't be afraid to try new things, and enjoy your time at IUB!
