Penn LSM program - Worth it?

I'm currently looking at Penn's LSM program, and was wondering if anyone can shed some light on their experience? Is it super competitive? And how does it compare with Penn's normal undergraduate admission process?

First off, it's important to recognize the uniqueness of the LSM program. The Vagelos Program in Life Sciences and Management (LSM) at University of Pennsylvania is an extremely unique program that merges two disciplines: science/technology and business. This dual degree program offers a B.S. in economics from the Wharton School and a B.A. in a life science discipline from the College of Arts and Sciences.

In terms of competitiveness, the LSM program accepts a very small number of students each year. The average enrolled class size is around 25 students, so yes, it is highly competitive. Without a doubt, the program selection process is more selective than the standard Penn undergraduate admissions process. The distinguishable factor is largely the cross-disciplinary interest and commitment of the applicant. Since the program focuses on integrating life sciences with business, the willingness and ability to handle workload coming from both disciplines plays a crucial role.

The application process for the LSM program is separate from the standard Penn application. You'll apply directly to the LSM program in your application and submit two additional essays specifically for this program. The admissions committee is looking for students who demonstrate an intense curiosity and ambition in both the life sciences and management.

It's also important to note that LSM also includes a summer internship program designed to provide practical experiences that integrate the life sciences with management, free advising through Penn Career Services, and a senior capstone.

However, the program's selectivity and workload shouldn't be deterrents, if you are genuinely interested in the intersection of the domains. If you feel that the blend of life sciences and management aligns with your career goals, then it absolutely can be worth it. LSM graduates often go on to have exciting and successful careers in a variety of fields such as biotech, pharmaceuticals, healthcare, research, finance, and consulting.
