Concerned about CS Acceptance Rate at UC Berkeley

I'm planning on applying to UC Berkeley for Computer Science, but I heard that the acceptance rate is frighteningly low. Does anyone perhaps have some insight into what they generally look for in CS applicants, or any suggestions on how to strengthen my application?

Absolutely, you're correct that admission to the Computer Science (CS) program at UC Berkeley can be quite competitive, particularly because of the high volume of applications and the program's reputation. That being said, remember that while exact acceptance rates can seem daunting, they don't determine individual chances—and there are certainly effective ways to strengthen your application.

To begin with, it's important to have a strong academic foundation in relevant subjects such as Math, Physics, and Computer Science. If your high school offers any advanced courses in these fields, aim to excel in them. Your grades and course rigor will demonstrate your commitment and ability to succeed in a rigorous academic environment like Berkeley's CS program. In addition, being proactive about your engagement with CS outside of the classroom can make a significant difference. This can include undertaking coding projects, participating in programming contests, or completing internships related to CS. This would fall under the Tier2 and Tier3 categories of extracurricular activities, showing high achievement and leadership. Remember though, that quantity is less important than displaying a clear, sustained curiosity and dedication to the discipline of CS.

Make sure to reflect these experiences authentically in your essays, focusing on what you learned, how you grew, and your passion for CS. Be sure to also demonstrate understanding of and personal alignment with UC Berkeley's values emphasizing diversity, inclusivity, equity, and social responsibility.

Lastly, for the UC schools, each of the personal insight questions are equally important. Ensure you are using all the prompts to build a coherent and comprehensive narrative about who you are, both in the context of CS and beyond.

While this may seem like a lot, keep in mind that the aim is to present an application that holistically represents your engagement, interests, and potential in the field of CS. Don't let the low acceptance rates discourage you—instead, use your application to highlight how much you have to offer. Good luck!
