Understanding the Waiting List Process at UC Davis

Hey guys. Does anyone know how the waiting list system works at UC Davis? I'm scared about getting waitlisted and trying to prepare for the worst. Any advice would certainly be appreciated.

I understand your fear and I think it's great that you are planning for possible future scenarios.

In terms of next steps after you get waitlisted, first, you need to accept your place on the waitlist. There should be instructions on how to do this in the letter that you've received from UC Davis. Typically, this will involve going to the online student portal, such as MyAdmissions.

After you've accepted your position on the waitlist, it's really a matter of waiting. UC Davis will reassess its enrollment numbers after the May 1 commitment deadline and will begin admitting students from the waitlist if there's space available. This is done within the context of the incoming class, college, and major. The process itself can continue into the summer, as UC Davis tries to fill any vacant spots.

During this time, it's important to commit to another school before that school's enrollment deadline. This way, you're guaranteed a place at college in the fall, regardless of what happens with UC Davis.

Moreover, some students write a brief letter of continued interest to express their ongoing desire to attend UC Davis. You could re-emphasize your enthusiasm for the school, update them on any new academic or extracurricular achievements since your application was submitted, and explain why you believe you would be a good fit. Before doing so, however, confirm that UC Davis is open to receiving such updates, as policies can vary.

Unfortunately, waitlists can be unpredictable – the number of students admitted from the waitlist can vary from year to year and depend on many factors beyond your control, such as how many admitted students choose to enroll. So while being on the waitlist offers a glimmer of hope, it's essential to have another plan in place. Good luck, and I hope you receive a positive outcome!
