Can I Change my Major at UCSD after Admission?

Currently, I'm looking at applying to UCSD and I was wondering if it's possible to switch majors after admission? If anyone has done this or knows someone who did, could you share some insight about how the process works?

Yes, changing majors after admission at UCSD (University of California, San Diego) is generally allowed. However, the process and ease of switching depends mainly on the majors involved.

For many majors at UCSD, switching is relatively straightforward and often just requires completing a major change form, provided that you meet the course prerequisites for the new major. These are sometimes referred to as non-capped or open majors.

That said, there are certain highly sought-after or impacted majors that are "capped." This means they have additional requirements and a separate application process. Examples could include some engineering, computer science, or biology majors. If you are accepted into UCSD under a non-capped major and then decide to switch to a capped major, you will need to apply for the major, usually after completing specific prerequisite coursework, and admission is not guaranteed. The admission decision for these capped majors is usually based on GPA in the relevant courses, among other factors.

It's always important to thoroughly research the specific requirements for the major you want to switch into. You should connect with the academic advisors to clarify any doubts and to ensure you're on the right path for your academic goals. Please remember, your ability to successfully switch majors will always depend on your own academic performance, the requirements of the new major, and sometimes, the availability of space.

In short, changing majors once you're at UCSD is possible, but making the switch might be easier for some majors than others.
