Hey everyone. I would love your input on this. What are some college options that are particularly geared towards those in the military? I'm thinking about enlisting after high school.
There are quite a few colleges and universities that have dedicated resources and support for students who are military service members.
Start with public state universities; they often offer in-state tuition to military students or their dependents, regardless of their current residency. For instance, the University of Texas system and Florida State system offer such benefits. Online programs at these schools can be particularly beneficial for active duty members.
There are also colleges and universities with recognition for military service, such as American Military University, which specifically caters to military personnel with flexible online programs.
Many schools participate in the Yellow Ribbon Program, which can help cover the costs that the GI Bill doesn't. The Post-9/11 GI Bill covers the tuition and fees at public institutions, but it only covers up to a maximum amount each year at private or foreign schools. The Yellow Ribbon Program can defray additional costs at these schools.
The Service members Opportunity Colleges (SOC) consortium is also a great resource to check out. It's a group of colleges & universities dedicated to helping servicemen and women and their families get college degrees. Members agree to ease the transfer of credits, give flexibility for grading and residency requirements, and more.
Additionally, the U.S. military academies — West Point (Army), Annapolis (Navy and Marines), and the Air Force Academy — are options. Admissions is highly competitive, and students commit to serve after graduation, but tuition is free.
Finally, while not a traditional college, the Defense Language Institute offers education in language and associated cultural studies.Remember to check each college's Veterans Affairs office for additional resources and support. Good luck with your decision and future plans!
