Converting Military Training to College Credits

Howdy folks, I've heard it's possible to convert certain military trainings into college credits. Doesn't anyone know how that works, or know of some kind of converter that breaks everything down?

Sure, happy to help explain that process. Many colleges and universities in the U.S. recognize the value of the training and experiences service members get in the military, and they offer college credits for it. This works through what's known as the Joint Services Transcript (JST).

The Joint Services Transcript documents your military occupational experience and training along with the corresponding ACE (American Council on Education) college credit recommendations. This official transcript converts your military training and experience into college credits, which can then be accepted at the discretion of the college or university you're looking to attend. You can request your JST simply by going to the JST website and following the instructions to get your transcript.

However, remember that the decision to accept these credits lies with the individual college or university. Each institution has its own policies and may apply the credits toward different requirements, such as electives, major requirements, or general education requirements. So, even if your JST says you have a certain number of credits, the receiving school determines how many of those credits they'll accept and where they'll apply them.

It's always a good idea to speak with a veteran services coordinator or academic advisor at your prospective schools about their policy on this. They can provide specific guidance related to military service credits at their institution. Also, be aware that some vocational or technical credits might not transfer over depending on the academic focus of the institution you're aiming to attend.

Lastly, keep in mind that the military also provides funding for members to pursue education through tuition assistance programs and the GI Bill, which can help cover the cost of tuition, housing, books, and more.

So, while there isn't a direct "converter" per se that universally applies, the JST system is the closest we have to that, and each college or university will evaluate your JST to see how they can apply your military training as college credits.
