UVa vs Boston College

I'm torn between applying to University of Virginia and Boston College. Both seem fantastic but I'm trying to figure out what will set one apart from the other. Could someone who's familiar with both schools weigh the pros and cons?

Sure, I'd be happy to highlight some key differences and similarities between both schools!

First, as a starting point, both Boston College (BC) and University of Virginia (UVa) are comparable in their academic strength, student body size, and broad range of extracurricular activities.

Applying to both schools could certainly increase your options, but if you're set on choosing between them, let's break down some differentiating factors each school brings:

Location:

UVa is situated in Charlottesville, Virginia, a quintessential college town with a rich history, an abundance of outdoor activities, and a tight-knit community feel. By contrast, BC is located in Chestnut Hill, a suburb of Boston, which provides an opportunity to take advantage of being near a major city known for its robust academic, cultural, and professional opportunities.Academic Culture:

UVa is known for its strong programs in business, environmental sciences, and English, and it operates on a semester system. UVa takes pride in its Honor Code and the student-initiated tradition of self-governance, both of which foster a unique sense of responsibility and commitment within the student body.

On the other hand, BC operates on a semester system as well, but it's known for its strong programs in finance, nursing, and psychology. BC, as a Jesuit institution, emphasizes service to others and promotes the idea of "men and women for others." It can be said that there is a greater emphasis on contemplating one’s personal values and ethics at BC than at most public universities.

Size and Admissions:

UVa is a considerably larger school, with about16,000 undergrads compared to BC's10,000. UVa, as a public school, also admits more in-state students; roughly70% of UVa students are from Virginia, while BC, as a private university, attracts a more geographically diverse student body.Sports and Spirit:

Well, if you're into athletics and school spirit, both schools have quite strong school spirits and compete in Division I athletics with football being quite prominent. BC is in the Atlantic Coast Conference, and UVa, also in the ACC, takes pride in its men’s basketball program.

At the end of the day, your decision might come down to personal fit—what you're looking for in terms of location, campus culture, student body, and academic offerings. Visit both schools (if possible), talk to current students or alumni and trust your gut with what feels right. It's not just about rankings and reputation, but choosing the program and environment where you'll thrive for the next four years. Remember, you can't go wrong either way—both are excellent institutions!
