Ethnic Category Classification for Portuguese

So, I'm working on my college applications, and there's this ethnicity question... As someone of Portuguese descent, how should I categorize myself? Is it considered Hispanic/Latinx, European, or something else?

While it might be a point of confusion, the U.S. Department of Education classifies people of Portuguese descent as European/White, and not Hispanic/Latinx. This is based on the Office of Management and Budget's definition of Hispanic or Latino, which refers to a person of Cuban, Mexican, Puerto Rican, South or Central American, or other Spanish culture or origin, regardless of race. However, it states that the term "Spanish origin" can also be used in addition to "Hispanic or Latino".

According to this definition, Portuguese and Brazilians do not fit into the Hispanic/Latinx ethnic category, because neither Portugal nor Brazil are Spanish speaking. Therefore, when you are filling out applications, you should usually select "White" or "European" for your ethnic category. However, you should always read the specific instructions on each form, as some may have different classifications or additional options.

Remember, college admissions have a broad perspective and will consider your individuality beyond just these basic demographic details. If there's a place in the application where you feel it's important to share your Portuguese heritage, don't hesitate to do so! For example, if there’s a part of the application where you can discuss your family background or personal history in more detail, it could be a great place to mention your Portuguese descent and how it's shaped your life experiences.
