How to Defer Admission to Northeastern?

Kinda stressed now, so here it goes: I just applied to Northeastern (yay!) but I might need to take a gap year for personal reasons and now I'm concerned what to do if I get accepted. Does anyone know how Northeastern's deferral process works? Is there a particular deadline by which I need to request deferral?

First of all, congratulations on submitting your application to Northeastern! I'm sure it's a huge weight off your shoulders.

Deferring your admission to Northeastern University is a straightforward process. You will need to fill out a form to request a deferral. This form will be located in your application portal, under the 'Forms' section. Make sure you fill it out as soon as possible to increase the chances of your request being approved.

Regarding deadlines, Northeastern generally asks students to submit their deferral requests by May 1st. However, I'd encourage you to reach out to Northeastern's office of admissions directly to get the exact dates and the specifics for your situation, since it might vary. You can reach the admissions office here: https://admissions.northeastern.edu/visit/contact/. Also, please do keep in mind that Northeastern’s policy is to grant or deny deferral requests at their own discretion, and usually for reasons like military service, religious obligations, required public service, and serious health issues.

Once you've submitted your deferral request, you should typically hear back within two to four weeks. If your deferral is approved, you'll need to submit a non-refundable deposit to confirm your enrollment for the next academic year.

Lastly, remember that during your gap year, Northeastern expects you to avoid coursework at other institutions unless explicitly approved by the Office of Admissions.

Hope this information helps. Wishing you all the best with your future endeavors!
