CMU SCS Class Size

Hey there! I am considering applying to the School of Computer Science at CMU. I'm worried about large class sizes though. Can anyone share their experience about class sizes within this program? Thanks!

Certainly! The class sizes at Carnegie Mellon University's School of Computer Science can vary depending on the specific course and level. Generally, the introductory classes like 15-112 (Fundamentals of Programming) or 15-122 (Principles of Imperative Computation) have a larger enrollment, often in the hundreds. These courses often use lecture halls and employ multiple teaching assistants in addition to the professor.

However, as you move into more advanced and specialized courses within the program, you'll find the class sizes tend to get significantly smaller. These classes are typically more discussion-oriented and project-based, thereby promoting more in-depth learning and close interaction with the professor and fellow students.

Overall, CMU's SCS department maintains a low faculty to student ratio, which allows for strong relationships between students and faculty to form over time, and an engaging and collaborative learning environment. Many students have said that despite some of the larger lectures, they've never felt lost in the crowd because of the supportive faculty and network of TAs.

To give an exact number, or an "average class size" would be difficult, as it really depends on the nature and level of the course. If smaller class sizes are a priority for you, it might be helpful to speak with current students or reach out to the department directly for more specifics based on the courses you're wondering about.

Finally, on a separate note, if you end up applying to CMU and want tips on how to maximize your chances of acceptance, I'd check out this blog post from CollegeVine, which breaks down how to tackle their school-specific supplemental essays: https://blog.collegevine.com/how-to-write-the-carnegie-mellon-essays/
