Hello all, I've recently heard about the bs/do program that NYIT offers and I'm thinking of applying. Can anyone tell me about how this program works and what the application process is like? I'm really interested in becoming a Doctor of Osteopathy so any advice would be great.
The BS/DO program at NYIT (New York Institute of Technology) is a seven-year combined program, where you spend the first three years completing undergraduate coursework and the next four years at NYIT's College of Osteopathic Medicine. To get admitted into this program, there are a few steps to follow. First, you will need to apply to NYIT as a pre-med student during your senior year of high school. Along with the regular application materials such as your transcript, SAT/ACT scores, and essays, you will be required to submit a specific application for the BS/DO program. This program is competitive, so it's important to have strong grades and test scores.
Once you've been accepted into the pre-medical program, you will begin the first three years of undergraduate education. During this time, you'll be required to maintain a specific GPA (as determined by NYIT) and will need to take the MCAT.At the end of the successful completion of your pre-med coursework, you will then move into the four-year Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) phase. This involves two years of classroom studies and two years of clinical rotations. If you meet all the criteria and complete the program successfully, you will graduate with a DO degree.
Regarding the DO program itself, it focuses on promoting health and wellness by diagnosing and treating the patient, not just the illness. Osteopathic medicine encourages a holistic approach to patient care, which can be an appealing feature for some prospective medical students.
Do recall higher education programs may change their criteria or process, always reflect the most current program details and requirements listed by the institution.
